Find the right plan for you.
The first step towards picking out your health insurance policy is deciding what sort of coverage you will need and what you will be using the benefits for. Even though a plan may state that it covers mental health and substance abuse treatment, doesn’t mean it’ll cover the specific treatment you need. It is important to read the fine print to ensure you are really getting the best options available to you.
How does Obamacare affect me?
There have been many changes with the healthcare industry as of late, and the most common question we field is related to Obamacare. Whether you’re in favor of the general program or not, the fact is that the changes made greatly benefit your ability to obtain quality treatment.
According to Tom McLellan, Obama’s former deputy drug czar, “There is not an illness currently being treated that will be more affected by the Affordable Care Act [Obamacare] than addiction.” He explains that our treatment system was built during a time when drug and alcohol addiction wasn’t seen as an illness, but it is now being revamped to greatly benefit those who are struggling with it.
Some benefits of the act are that insurance is now:
- Easier to get – you can no longer be denied due to pre-existing conditions, including addiction.
- More affordable for more people – Young adults are now covered under their parents’ insurance up to the age 26, and income limits have been expanded for publicly-funded rehab programs.
- Higher quality – almost every health plan must include coverage for mental health and addiction services.
